The NAAJ-Sonja Hillgren Journalism Scholarship at the University of Missouri was established in 2007 following the death of Sonja Hillgren, the editor of Farm Journal and a past North American Agricultural Journalists president. She was only 58 when she died in 2006.

NAAJ set up the scholarship to be for only journalism majors at the University of Missouri because it honors one of our former presidents who graduated in journalism there. In setting up the scholarship, we agreed to let the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism decide which student(s) would be recipients and how many scholarships to give based on how much is available as it is now an endowed scholarship.

NAAJ’s purpose includes service as an educational and professional organization of journalists, devoted to improving agricultural coverage in the news. We are devoted to continuing that effort by helping to training up-and-coming journalists.
